Olympic Games

With the Olympic Games only 100 days away, employers should ensure that they have a policy in place regarding time off and access to watching or listening to the Olympic Games. Whatever the policy, it needs to be communicated to both staff and managers, so that it is clearly understood and can be consistently applied.

Businesses located close to Olympic venues also need to consider potential travelling difficulties that the staff may face and how they are going to respond. For example, businesses may consider whether should there be adjustments to working hours during the Games. Whilst many employees will be following the Olympics, there will be others who have no interest in the Games and businesses should be mindful of their views.

Qualifying period for unfair dismissal increases to two years

The qualifying period for employees to bring a claim of unfair dismissal increases from one year to two years. The increase will apply only to employees who start a new job on or after 6 April 2012. The new legislation also increases from one year to two years the qualifying period for the right to receive, on request, a written statement of reasons for dismissal. Employers should review their policies and procedures to reflect these changes.
